Abbreviations, Ranks and Jargon

New OutRiders (NOR) and *NOR/

The “*” symbolizes our shield with a star. The star is called “Swift” and is named for the comet Swift-Tuttle that was visible in 1992 (the founding year of the Order), due to return in 2125.

NOR is the acronym for New OutRiders.

The “/” symbolizes a sword. The sword is called “Ybarra”, named for the creator of the game The Shadow of Yserbius, which is the birthplace of the Order.

These three components combine to form our traditional greeting of “Hail *NOR/” to our guildmates upon entering the chat in all of our Realms and Branches.

NOR Jacket and the Jacket Creed.:

The NOR Jacket is your guild tag and identifies you as a member of the Order. The Jacket Creed is the code we all agree to abide by while we represent our Guild and a condition of the privilege of wearing this Jacket. The Jacket in modern times is represented by the New OutRiders or NOR tag that we display with pride in the games we play.

“I promise to wear the NOR name with pride. While wearing it, I will bring no shame or dishonor to NOR in word or deed. I will defend it and anyone else who wears it to the uttermost limits of my ability.”

Guild EPI (Epithet):

The guild epithet is our traditional identifier and correspondence signature as a member of the Order. You will mainly see this used as a signature in forums or email, newsletters, or other correspondence. Historically it was used in the in-game biography or about me type sections to quickly identify a member at a glance by their Rank, Duchy, County, Barony, and any awards they have earned that they wish to display.

An example of modern usage would be something like this, let’s imagine it’s for a player called Squire Wiggins.
Their EPI would look like this: *NOR/SQ-FFxiv SSB-2

Let’s break it down. *NOR/ is our Guild. SQ is the abbreviated rank for Squire, FFxiv is the Final Fantasy XIV Duchy, and SSB-2 means they have earned the Silver Starburst award twice, which is a recruiting award that can be earned for bringing in 10 people who stay with us and get inducted as a member in a Squiring ceremony.

Realms and Branches:

Realm: The term that the guild uses for a game it has a branch of the guild in.
Active Realm: The NOR Realms are the most active games that New OutRiders members currently play. These branches of the guild actively recruit, organize events, and have a structured hierarchy.
Branch: Though it is sometimes used interchangeably with Active Realm, its more specific meaning is for a provisional Barony or County, where members of the Order have formed up to build it up toward Active Realm status.
NOMAD: NOMAD games are places where the New OutRiders “jacket” guild name is used by our members. These branches have no recruiting or structured hierarchy. examples: Closed inactive branches where a few members remain or new games that have not yet developed enough interest to become full NOR Realms.
Realm Archive: The Realm Archive is a record of all our games, within you will find your old guildmates and where they currently play.

Rank Structure of the Guild

The Order of the New OutRiders is structured as a kingdom of many Realms, Branches, and NOMAD groups under a feudal system. Overall, NOR is ruled by the Lords and Ladies of the High Council who confer and decide the issues and policies that the Order faces as a whole. The Active Realms are led by Dukes/Duchesses, who are assisted by the Counts/Countesses appointed by them. Each Count or Countess has multiple Barons/Baronesses, who are the Officers in the trenches and group leaders, that they advise in the coordinating of the events and activities in the Realm they are assigned.

The rank and file of the Order are the Champions, Knights, and Squires. Most of the membership holds the rank of Squire. A Squire is a member who has gone through the recruiting process and has been officially inducted as a member of the Order in a Squiring ceremony performed by a guild officer. Knights are members who have been a Squire for a while, are active in their Realms, and really set the example for others upholding the Jacket Creed and displaying NOR values. Champions are exceptional members promoted from the Knight ranks and the first considered when it comes to selecting a new guild officer.

There are other titled duties as well, such as Dungeon Master, Herald, Scribe etc., which can be found below. These ranks are an additional rank title that supplements the regular NOR rank.

Ranks in the Order carry over between Realms. For example: if you’re a Knight in one game, you will be assigned as a Knight in all.
