Gutbur’s Grand Adventure: Session #006

The Adventure Continues…

avatar DM

[DM]:
You can head off the next morning at your leisure.

Avatar Gutbur

[Gutbur]:
I’ll head out first light.

avatar DM

[DM]: Surprisingly, Nesrug and Umbdri are already up, and see you off. Nesrug has wild eyes this morning has he adjusts some set screws inside his robot.

Avatar Gutbur

[Gutbur]:
I wish them well and tell them I will stop back in if I head back this way.

avatar DM

[DM]: They see you out. Your horse is awake and ready to go.
He doesn’t seem to like being in town any more than you do.

Avatar Gutbur

[Gutbur]: We understand each other 😉

I’m staying on the road east out of Triboar until I reach Yartar.

avatar DM

[DM]: It is easy enough to make that trip, and there are a lot of merchant caravans who head that way if you want to blend in. Yartar, besides being on the road to Silverymoon, is also a river port at the head of the Desarin river.

You’ll reach Yartar around night fall. As you approach the bridge leading across the Desarin and into the city, you notice that unlike Triboar, Phandalin, Westbridge, Longsaddle, etc, Yartar is a walled city. You can see a caravan camping ground on this side of the river, and one of the other travelers also mentions that there is another on the eastern side of town. There isn’t one on the northern road out of town.

Avatar Gutbur

[Gutbur]:
Is the city gated?

avatar DM

[DM]: Unofficial map is good enough.

The caravan grounds are not pictured. As you can see, it isn’t like a wooden palisade like Leilon. It is a proper wall.

Avatar Gutbur

[Gutbur]: I will wait until morning and hopefully move with the merchants and caravans inside the city, otherwise I will try to enter if they open the gates in the morning.

avatar DM

[DM]: I should have explained.
It is gated, but the gets only close under threat of danger. So they are open the whole time.

Avatar Gutbur

[Gutbur]: Oh, okay. Well, I will still wait until morning – I am wary of getting looks or challenged at night by the guards and I would not get far at night anyway.

My aim is to enter and exit the city as quickly as possible.

avatar DM

[DM]: Sure thing, you rise in the morning and head into the city. There are signs making navigating easy enough. So you can get in and through to the north gate easy enough.

There are a lot of guards in this city. Per capita, more than you saw in Neverwinter. Given that the city’s lifeblood is trade, that makes sense. Nobody hassles you. A couple vendors shout at you as you walk by, as they do with everybody else, trying to turn your attention to their bits and baubles.

Avatar Gutbur

[Gutbur]:
I’m not shopping, I’d like to get through that north gate and into the wilds ASAP!

avatar DM

[DM]: You make it through. The northern side of town doesn’t have buildings outside the wall like the western and, you presume, eastern sides of town do. Probably because of all the barbarians to the north.

Avatar Gutbur

[Gutbur]: …
yeah, this is exactly why I wanted to get in and out quickly …

avatar DM

[DM]: You know, if you were to rank all the Uthgardt tribes in terms of popularity with the other tribes, the Red Hawk would be near the bottom.

Avatar Lasarian

(Lasarian):
DM throwing shade on my character’s culture …

Avatar Gutbur

[Gutbur]:
Why is that?

avatar DM

[DM]: Because the main foe of nearly every other tribe is Orcs.

Some elk tribe wench gets freaky with some orcs a few hundred years ago, and now you’ve got a half breed tribe.

You don’t know exactly where Flint Rock is, you never had the chance to attend moot there but you have a general idea of the vicinity and you should be able to make it there by nightfall.

Avatar Gutbur

[Gutbur]: Ok, I think I will stop short of where Flint Rock might be and camp for the night a few hours away so I am not openly invading their ancestral mount under cover of darkness. I’ll set off hoping to make Flint Rock in the morning.

avatar DM

[DM]:
Make a Wisdom (Survival) check.

25

[Gutbur: Survival]: 1d20 (20) + 5 = 25

Avatar Gutbur

[Gutbur]:
Gutbur is wise today.

avatar DM

[DM]: You’ve been gone for a while, but you do recall that The Evermoors, a wetlands, are inhabited by a large number of trolls, so you decide to camp on the south side of the hill leading toward Flint Rock, rather than on the north or western sides.

Avatar Gutbur

[Gutbur]:
Okay, I gotchya.

avatar DM

[DM]:
Encounter avoided.

Avatar Lasarian

(Lasarian): rofl
I will be slogging through that area soon enough.
I hate trolls.

avatar DM

[DM]: There is a road through the Evermoors to Mornbryn’s Shield, a small town.

While you sleep, make a perception check with disadvantage.

20

[Gutbur: Perception]:
1d20 (15) + 5 = 20

11

[Gutbur: Perception]:
1d20 (6) + 5 = 11

avatar DM

[DM]:
You are awoken to the sound of something rummaging through your food pack.

Avatar Gutbur

[Gutbur]:What do we have here?
From now on I’m slinging up a bear bag …

avatar DM

[DM]: You turn and investigate to find a massive elk nosing through your food bag.
The four legged kind, not the tribe.

Avatar Gutbur

[Gutbur]:
I will actually give it a minute to eat something then chase it off.

avatar DM

[DM]:
Make a Wisdom (Animal Handling) check.

8

[Gutbur: Animal Handling]: 1d20 (3) + 5 = 8

avatar DM

[DM]: You do manage to chase it off, but in the middle of it it slams into you, and staggers you onto your somehow-still-asleep horse, which gets up and bolts.

Avatar Gutbur

[Gutbur]:
Now I am wishing I took a shot at it …

avatar DM

[DM]:
You still can if you want.

Avatar Gutbur

[Gutbur]: Dust myself off and go after my horse …
No, I’m not going to go killing an Elk in Elk Tribe territory …

avatar DM

[DM]: Ah, my clever trap failed.
Meanwhile, your horse is getting further away.

Avatar Gutbur

[Gutbur]: I don’t think I need to run the horse down, just keep an eye on it’s trail. It should put itself together eventually and calm down … eventually.

It is a warhorse, I would hope it wouldn’t be so jumpy.

avatar DM

[DM]: Indeed. It does come back about an hour later, and you see it coming in the moonlight. You can also see that somebody is riding on it. All you can see in the dark is a silhouette.

Avatar Talolan

(Talolan):
Which I spelled correctly on the!

Avatar Lasarian

(Lasarian):
Yeah, I’ve never spelled that word correctly ever.

avatar DM

[DM]: Staying just out of range of the firelight, you hear a voice ask, in Bothii the language of the Uthgardt, “Who are you, who would be so foolish as to camp in Elk territory during moot-time when all of the Elk clans are gathered?”

Avatar Gutbur

[Gutbur]:
“I am Gutbur of the Red Hawk, I mean no offense or trespass. I am traveling north for moot also.”

avatar DM

[DM]: Your horse strides into the light, and you see a man you haven’t seen since you were a small child riding it: Rond Vaarson, great chief of the Elk Tribe.

“You’re late, our shaman expected the last Blood Hawk two days ago. She has need of you, be quick.” And he kicks your horse and heads north toward Flint Rock.

To be clear, he’s riding your horse still.

Avatar Gutbur

[Gutbur]:
Looks like I’m stretching my legs …

Avatar Talolan

(Talolan):
That’s all for now. Gotta pick up the kids.

Avatar Lasarian

(Lasarian): Alrighty 😉

Time for me to get dinner ready.

The Adventure Continues… (Lasarian): Sorry for fermenting your post so long. [Gutbur]: As I am in the company of the Elk, I would follow their lead. Pillaging two people seems more like just robbing them, which I am ambivalent about. Tempting though … I haven’t had a chance to RP some good old fashioned pillaging….
