Hail*NOR/
It’s been a looong time since I last posted here about this game. So with what is currently happening with it I thought it was time to share some info with you all. It is a gorgeous game and has come a long way since it was first announced back in 2012. This year the one Billion dollar mark was reached! This is a lot of backers pledging for ships and game development!
Star Citizen is two parts. The first is the MMO named Star Citizen. It has had quite a lot added to it recently, mainly within the last two years. The second part is the single player game called Squadron 42 which is due to release Q2 2027 and it was just added to Steam so it can be put on a wish list now. The gaming company is about ready to give a release date it looks like. So now is the time to start paying attention to what is happening if you like space games at all.
Once Squadron 42 releases, they will be moving a lot of the devs to the MMO side of development, finally! This will speed up new updates to the MMO game. Recently, stuff like crafting have been added. It is just a start, but they are constantly adding new blueprints and materials for crafters to search out and create improved gear with. Mining has been revamped (again) and resources can be mined by hand, vehicle, and with many sizes of spaceships. On planets, moons, and asteroids. Take ores to a refinery and you will end up with the materials used in many recipes.
Currently there are well over 200 different spaceships and ground vehicles to choose from. All game packages for the MMO Star Citizen come with some type of spaceship. Additional spaceships and ground vehicles can be added if desired, but are not required. Game packages for Star Citizen currently start at $60.00, but are often discounted to $45.00 during a sale or free testing events. Most ships will be obtainable in game, most are already available to rent or buy with the in-game currency already. Money is easy to earn in game right now, and prices are low so things can be tested easier and faster. It is easy to find someone who will loan you a ship or take you for a ride in a ship you have not seen yet!
In November there will be the large annual ship sale, which will also have a ‘Freefly Event’ along with it which allows anyone to download and try the game free for about a week. This is the best way to see how the game will run on your system. It is rather demanding compared to most games, but some older systems can run the game fairly well. It is a huge download over 100 GB but well worth it if you enjoy space stuff and flying ships.
Overall the game has a Star Warsy feel to it. Some of the ships look more like Star Trek, but there are over a dozen different ship manufacturers all with their own style. So there is something that will appeal to everyone. Most players have a basic game package which mostly have single seat ships, but some do have smaller multi-player ships which hold 2 or 3 players max. Ship sizes go up to huge warships which will need dozens of crew members to be fully crewed. There are specialty ships for cargo of all sizes, mining, salvaging of ships, medical gameplay, fleet command, various large ships for carrying fighters into battle, data runners, refueling, repair, bounty hunting, and other professions/activities.
The game is far from complete. It will be several years before it hits Beta. There are several basic systems which still need to be added, and others which need to be expanded. Base building is going to be added soon, and players will be able to place vendors in their bases to sell goods from. Sounds a lot like Star Wars Galaxies to me. That game was way ahead of it’s time 20 years ago. Some updates have more bugs than others, so be prepared for any and all sorts of game bugs. If you have played very early access games before, then you know a bit about what that can mean. But there is more than enough of a game right now to be able to play it for hundreds of hours doing different missions and going to new locations.
There are currently 3 solar systems which you can take your ship to via wormholes. Flying through them is a little bit of a challenge by itself. There are dozens of planets and moons to travel to. There are many types of missions (quests) which will take you all over for solo and group gameplay, whichever you prefer. There is a high learning curve, so picking it up now will make it easier in the long run over waiting until the MMO game finally releases.
f you purchased a Star Citizen game package years ago, it may already include the Squadron 42 single player game. SQ42 was removed from sales back in 2023. It will probably be for sale within this next month. (My best guesstimate with what I know.) You can look at your account on the RSI website to see what your game package includes. If you do not yet have an account for Star Citizen then I would suggest making one now. It costs nothing and you should always be using someone’s referral code when creating every new account. This will get you and them a little extra reward so why not? My personal referral code is STAR-BQW5-ZMTJ and you can create an account with it here https://www.robertsspaceindustries.com/enlist?referral=STAR-BQW5-ZMTJ Use your friend’s code, or use yours when you are creating a new account for your kid. Just use a code so you and someone else get a bonus!
By creating an account now, even when you have not purchased anything yet, you can obtain items to use and keep in game now! There are events many times a year where you can go visit a webpage and get an item added to your account permanently. There is a holiday event every December where you can get rewards like clothing, weapons, decoration, ship paints, and more. Just for visiting the right page each day the event is running. Last year it was 13 days, so there were 13 rewards to obtain. Even if you do not have the game purchased yet. Pretty cool. There are also events in game over the course of the year where we can do some type of mission, usually over and over, to earn stuff to keep. Usually you would need a game package for these, unless an event is happening during a freefly week when the game is free to try out.
