I played eq2 for a few years:). The tiers used to be the power of the spell, Let's say you have a fire ball spell that does 100 pts of dmg and you bought the adept version off a vendor. Then you can buy the same spell off a crafter in the expert verision and it will do 120pts of dmg, then I think there is a rare drop 3rd verision that would do like 135pts of dmg.

Etc.. It has been several years since I have played but I think that is how it was.

The master+ spell tier is *not* needed. Heck, you don't even need expert level most of the time. They do help, but you can have a blast even without that level. EQ2 does limit gear that you can wear. At least at my 'free' level (silver?), I cannot wear Fabled or Legendary. Again, not something you need while enjoying the leveling content.

To just get on and play, the free option really doesn't limit you too much. Now if you are a raider or a min/maxer, then yes, the F2P option is very limiting. Can't get the best spell tiers, can't wear the best gear, etc. But that is really not necessary to get on play, level and enjoy the game in any way. Come on in and test the waters, it is definitely a game that I simply can't give up.

Preferably just to look at the free portion of the game? It seems there are only 4 races and 8 classes? Any good combos there? I am definitely not the min/max type I just like to play characters that are fun

I don't recall there being any racial bonuses, like DDO has. So I think you can pick pretty much pick anything and be successful:)

I notice the character creation said stuff like Barbarians were good fighters and priests etc.. so I assumed there were at least some stats related to races hrmm. If it doesn't make a difference I suppose you pick just on looks?

Thats correct, you can level all the way up to 92 without having to purchase anything. Basically F2P accounts are limited on class/race selection, number of character slots, spell tiers, equipment tiers, some zones, etc,. It can all be seen at http://www.everquest2.com/free for full disclosure of limitations. But none of these limitations stop a F2P player from being able to enjoy the game. All content is doable as a F2P player. I will caveat that with yes, it will be slightly more dificult with lower tier spells and equipment, but not impossible. SOE has adapted much of the content for F2P players so that it is do-able. If you are a raider or min/maxer, yes, you will not put out the DPS or be able to take the damage of someone with a gold account unless you pay for unlocks for spells and gear, but that in no way stops you from being able to go through the same content. If anyone has questions, please let me know I would be more than happy to answer them. I would love to see some new faces in EQ2.
