Getting Started in DDO, Pre-Login

Post by Talolan »

Hail *NOR/

This post is for everybody who is interested in joining us for the first Free-to-Play Guild Unity Event on the weekend of November 16-18! Obviously before you start playing you'll need to get DDO downloading and installed, and have your account created.

Getting DDO

Method One - DDO.com
Link: http://www.ddo.com/en/ddosupport/download-ddo

From the link above you can download the DDO Client Installer which will download and install DDO for you. There are two options, Standard and High Resolution. Bear in mind that DDO was released in 2006. If you can play WoW with the settings turned up reasonably high, or you can play SWTOR or GW2 at all, you can run the DDO High Resolution client. Just download and install.

Method Two - Steam
Steam users can download and install DDO via Steam. It'll be installed in the same place as all your other Steam games, and you'll have access to the Steam overlay in game while playing. The steam client is the High Res version, the standard version is not available. Also, the game's updates are not delivered via Steam, it is still patched by its own launcher.

Create an Account

Whether you install the game with the client download, or you install via Steam, you need to create a DDO account.

Method One - No Turbine Account

If you don't have a Turbine account (because you've never played any other Turbine games, like LOTRO, Ascheron's Call, etc), you can use the link above to create a new DDO account. Its pretty simple.

Method Two - Existing Turbine Account

If you have an existing Turbine account, and you'd like to share your login information across DDO, LOTRO, etc, you'll have to fill out a ticket on the link above, and ask Turbine for a new free-to-play DDO account key. When they responded (I got my response the next day), you sign in to your Turbine account, add the key and you are ready to go.

Patch the Game

One the game is installed, and your account is created. Launch the game and wait. The patcher for DDO is (in my opinion) very slow as it appears to download and update all the files individually rather than as a single large package. Before we get started on any guild events, you'll want to make sure that you are all patched up. To be safe, you should really do this the day before you log in.

Login and Join the Server

Enter your login information and you'll be presented with a server list. You'll want to join "Ghallanda."
