Notes: 5/24/2017 session 1
Phandelin
  • the halfing woman's child taken by wolves.
  • the mother is Queline and child Carp
  • she transformed into werewolf and held by the mayor Sildar Halwinter and healed by the cleric Tundrra hammerstone.
  • Searched her home on the edge of the town and found tracks leading into the woods.
  • The party tracked through the dark and increasing fog for hours and hours.
  • Eventually finding a road that should be.
East of Bolveria
  • letter in woods found on corpse warning others to stay way from bolveria
  • blockade/gates to bolveria
  • Followed the tracks of the wolves to a small village, once in we lost the trail.
  • 2 children found in the street ask for our help to investigate their home and its scary noise.
Bolveria: DeathHouse
  • you searched the first two floors of the house.
  • You found that all of the carvings and frescos, which look really nice on first glance, have secret evil imagery in them (snakes,skulls, sacrifice, the three big S's).
  • letter in chest, in secret room ' Strahd von Zarovich'
  • Along with a deed to a windmill
    @ArconHH found a note that reads: wrote:My most pathetic servant,

    I am not a messiah sent to you by the Dark Powers of this land. I have not come to lead you on a path to immortality. However many souls you have bled on your hidden altar however many visitors you have tortured in your dungeon, know that you are not the ones who brought me to this beautiful land. You are but worms writhing in my earth.

    You say that you are cursed, your fortunes spent. You abandoned love for madness, took solace in the bosom of another woman, and sired a still born son. Cursed by darkness? Of that I have no doubt. Save you from your wretchedness? I think not. I much prefer you as you are.

SESSION 2 June 7th 2017

Bolveria: Death House
  • Tybolt stole the cutlery from the dining room.
  • Malik discovered that the suit of armor wasn't the only animated object in the house, when investigating a surprisingly clean closet and being attacked by the broom.
  • A spectral nursemaid attacked you when entering an nursery. You later found her corpse in the attic stuffed in a trunk.
  • You found the bodies of the children Rose & Thorn in the attic, locked in their bedroom. They had starved to death, Thorn wouldn't speak to you, but Rose told you that the house projected their images outside to bring you in, and that the house itself is possessed of an evil spirit.
  • You put the children to rest in their crypts in the basement. They seemed grateful.
  • You found two dining halls in the basement, and several small bedrooms/bedrolls that look like they were in habited by some kind of cult. Tybolt looted their footlockers finding several valuables and a silvered shortsword.
  • -The larder for one of the dining halls was the home to an angry Grick.
  • Upon leaving the second dining hall, you encountered a hall way with 3 visible Ghouls.

Session 4
Death House
  • You fled from the house with the Shambling Mound in tow. When you got back into the house proper, the facade was blown and you saw the house for what it really was: sagging moldy walls, spectral knives in the doorways, etc.
  • Tybolt and Edmond opened Tybolt and Edmond shaped holes in the walls, which released a few swarms of rats, but you managed to defeat the rats and escape.
  • Upon exiting, the house collapsed in on itself like an empty soda can under pressure. You noticed a discarded sign in the bushes that read "Death House: Don't Talk to the Children"

Barovia Village: Blood on the Vine Tavern
  • From there you made your way to the Blood on the Vine Tavern, where you met the barkeep, who didn't say much, Ismark Kolyanovich the Burgomaster of Barovia Village (son of Kolyan Indirovich whose letter warning you to stay away you found outside of town) and 3 Vistani women who own the Inn.
  • Tybolt knows from saloon talk and tall-tales that the Vistani are known to be inter-planar gypsies.
  • Upon learning that you not only entered the death house, but escaped with your lives, Ismark asked you to take his sister to the town of Vallaki where she might be safe from the devil who rules this land.
  • The Vistani insulted him as "Ismark the lesser" who will never live up to his father's level. The Vistani also bade that you seek out Madam Eva at the Vistani encampment on the road outside of town.
  • Ismark offered you lodging at his family home, and said that Vistani aren't to be trusted.
Barovia Village: Streets
  • On the way to the mansion you met Mad Mary, whose daughter Gertruda has run away, probably to the devil.
  • Upon reaching his house, (Ireena Kolyana, sister of Ismark Kolyanovich, daughter of Kolyan Indirovich) said she wouldn't go to Vallaki until their father had been laid to rest. He died three days earlier after his old heart gave out from the stress of nightly wolf attacks.
  • Deluna meets a old woman Morgantha with a food cart and buys a muffin from her.
  • You took a long rest.

Barovia Village: Village Church
  • The next morning, you headed to the church with the former burgomaster's coffin, and laid him to rest in a ceremony in the graveyard.
  • The Church had fallen into disrepair as the priest had lost his faith after his son 'died' following a Mad Wizard to Castle Ravenloft to fight the devil.
  • priest in the Village of Barovia was Father Danovich, his vampire spawn son was Doru.
  • You found that the priests son had been made into a Vampire Spawn and was locked in the undercroft of the church.
  • The priest was completely heart broken, but could not ask you to kill his son, nor did he aid you in any way.
  • You entered the undercroft and after a very long fight managed to destroy the Vampire Spawn named Doru.
  • Tybolt was rendered unconscious during the fight and nearly died. Tybolt and Malaquena both feel particularly drained after the fight.
  • Edmond and Malaquena noticed that radiant damage seemed to disable the vampire spawn's regeneration abilities, but not until after he had regenerated the equivalent of its entire health pool.
  • Edmond said that you must keep your faith to prevent the spawn's regeneration, it was the best RP moment of the night

SESSION 5

West of Barovia Village
  • After a long rest at the Burgomaster's house the party rises early to escort Ireena to Vallaki.
  • The party traveled the road for several hours, upon finding a crossroad with a empty hangmens noose. After investigating the party continued west.
  • Moments later a indescribable body appears hanging from the noose, causing some concern.
  • Malaquena sees herself as the figure and causes her some grief.
Vistani Camp
  • card reading
The Road
  • After several more hours of travel the party comes upon a Windmill looking over Vallaki.
  • Deluna tells the party that the old woman selling pastries in Barovia, her sisters live here. Still carrying a purchased muffin, Deluna decides to present it to the sisters.
  • Malik however has different ideas. Piecing together that the deed he found in the deathhouse is this very windmill and now his rightful property seeks to go into the house to evict or set up a lease agreement with these squatters.
  • A crow sitting above the door warns the party of "Hags" (Deluna's "speak with animals")
Bonecrusher Windmill
  • After some yelling and banging on the door a old woman on the 2nd floor opens a window and shouts down at the party.
  • Deluna recognized her as the same old woman from the village.
  • Edmond tells the party 3 fiends are inside the building.
  • After some negotiating Malik convinces the Hag to give the party a tour of the property.
  • there are pastries cooking, bones on the floor and Malik talks his way up through the windmill.
  • On the top floor which is a very small area, Malik meets the other 2 hags and sees to children being held captive in crates.
  • Continuing back down stairs talking rent, Malik mentally informs tundrra of the children, who in turn initiates combat by wrapping the woman in vines on the stairway. Insisting the party wasn't leaving without the kids.
  • during combat tybolt knocks over a vat of pitch which catches fire, causing the windmill its self to burn.
  • combat continues up the stairs away from the rapidly spreading fire.
  • Edmond bolts to the top floor to and grabs the kids.
  • the hags jump through the window and disappear, and make their way outside.

SESSION 6
Bonecrusher Windmill
  • Nimm pins a hag down with is immovable rod
  • Edmond fears a 2nd hag
  • all but the entire party except Edmond is put under unconscious/sleep spell.
  • the rescued children and Ireena were able escape.
  • Edmond parleys, waking Nimm in order to remove his immovable rod from one of the hags chests.
  • while the hags try to make Nimm sign a contract in blood the rest of the players are able to wake more party members.
  • once DeLuna is awakened he is able summon a smoke screen allowing the party escape, while the hags laugh at our escape.

Vallaki - BlueWater Inn
  • The inn keepers are Urwin and Danika Martikov.
  • Rictavio, the owner of a traveling carnival who is in Barovia scouting for talent and is now trapped like you, took the children to St. Andral's Chuch on the western side of town. Ireena stayed with you, per your agreement with her brother.
  • The traveling circus owner is Rictavio. He's a half-elf. the only non-human you've met thus far.
  • The priest at St Andral's Church in Vallaki is Father Lucian Petrovich.
  • Malik chatted up to young nobel men, and played a few rounds of Giants & Halflings with them. Meanwhile, Tybolt stole one of their coin purses and got 250 gold.
  • You learned that the Nobel's mother is Lady Fiona Wachter, and they says she's the most powerful person in town, but the brother's aren't happy with her, because she recently cut back on their allowances.
  • You also met Szoldar & Yevgeni, two wolf hunters. They will accompany you, during the day, into the wilds of Barovia as guards and guides, for 5 gp a day. They will not accompany you at night. Yevgeni did most of the talking, Szoldar simply parroted his friend with 1 or 2 word echoes.
  • The wolf hunters are Szoldar Szoldaravich and Yevgeni Krushkin. Szoldar does all the talking, Yevgeni just nods in ascent.
  • You learned there is a 2gp bounty on wolves. A very large sum. Wolves serve the devil Strahd.
  • The 6 of you secured lodgings at the Blue Water Inn for 4gp a night. Each night comes with dinner and breakfast.
Vallaki Streets
  • silvered a bunch of weapons at the Blacksmith across from the Inn
  • The blacksmith in Vallaki was named Nikolai.

SESSION 7

Vallaki: Blue Water Inn
  • Edmond's disconnection from Lathander is starting to get to him, he had a fitful night of sleep.
  • Tybolt was plagued by bad dreams of setting fires throughout Vallaki at the encouragement of the Hags, he seemed to be enjoying it.
  • The party woke up and had breakfast, meeting Urwin Martikov, the proprietor of the Blue Water Inn. He answered some questions you had about Vallaki, and directed you toward the church. He also told you not to run afoul of the town guard captain, who can be violent.
Vallaki: Church of the Morninglord
  • Upon arriving in the church you were greeted by the priest, but he initially didn't want to take Ireena in, because the artifact that had provided the church its protection against Strahd (the bones of St Andral himself) were stolen from the crypt under the church.
  • You shook down the altar boy Yeska, and the grave digger Milijov.
  • Milijov directed you to the town coffin maker and carpenter, Henrik Vander Voort, and took you to his home/shop.
Streets of Vallaki
  • On the way you passed through the town square, where you found 7 people locked in the stocks. 3 adult men, 2 adult women, and 2 children. The adults all had plaster donkey heads over their heads in the stocks. Milijov told you they are being punished for defying the Baron's happiness edicts.
  • On approaching the coffin makers shop, Tybolt noticed that the party was being followed. He tried to duck away from the party, but he spooked whomever was following you, and lost the trail.
Vallaki: Coffin Shop
  • It didn't take much to crack Henrik, and he told you that Strahd promised him safety and comfort if he obtained the bones from the church, and that the bones were locked in a room upstairs in his workshop. He didn't seem very phased by the conversation, in fact, he didn't show any emotion during the entire encounter.
  • Edmond was able to determine that there were 6 undead upstairs, and you learned that all six were Vampire Spawn.
  • You flagged down a city guard, who let out a call to summon more guards.
  • The guard captain is Izek Strazni.
  • More guards arrived, along with the captain, Izek Strazni. One of Izek's arms is red and scaly and ends with what you can only call a demonic claw hand.
  • After assessing the situation, Izek spotted Ireena who was keeping a safe distance from the Vampire Spawn in the house, and called her a witch who was haunting his dreams, and had her arrested and locked up in the Burgomaster's Mansion.
  • Getting back to the situation with the bones and Vampire Spawn, Izek ordered the guards to light their arrows on fire and burn the house. Edmond was still in the house.
  • This started initiative. Members of the party tried to rush upstairs to obtain the cask with the bones in it, upon entering the storage room six vampire spawn burst out of earth filled crates in the room.
  • Edmond charged right into the center of the room while Malaquena and her Fox went in the front. Tybolt scaled the outside of the building to enter a second story window.
  • The guards fired their arrows at the house and set it ablaze. Izek shot fire from his demon arm, doing the same.
  • Three of the spawn swarmed Edmond but couldn't pierce his armor (in fact, none of them rolled better than a 10 to hit, so they wouldn't have hit anybody in the party). One headed down the stairs, one headed to the crate with the bones, and one headed to the window and took a couple swipes at Tybolt, one of which connected.
  • At the start of the second round, Edmond turned them with a save DC of 13 The one on the stairs succeeded, its save with a roll of 13 exactly. The other 5 all failed, which kind of destroyed the encounter.
  • Izek and the Guards fired a second volley of flame at the house.
  • Tybolt managed to pick up the crate containing the bones and toss it out the window, narrowing missing DeLuna's head.
  • 5 of the spawn started to flee, and the party beat the hell out of the 6th.
  • It tried to escape over the roof, but the ceiling collapsed under it and it burned to death.
  • And that is where you ended for the night.
Other things you learned:
  • The burgomaster of Vallaki is Baron Vargas Vallakovich.
  • There is a haunted mansion to the west and south of town, it is said that a dragon used to live there.
  • There is an Abbey, the Abbey of St Markovia, in the town of Krezk, far to the west of the valley near the edge of Strahd's domain.
  • The children, Freek & Myrtle have been placed with a foster family who are parishioners at St Andral's church.

SESSION 8

Bones of St Andral
  • You returned the bones to St Andral’s church. When Father Petrovich put the bones back in their crypt, Edmond felt a warmth wash over the structure, and he knew that the church was now hallowed ground.
  • Father Petrovich offered to plea for the release of Ireena after her arrest by Izek.
  • Izek invited you to dine with the Burgomaster, as your party of newcomers has helped the town with a problem.
Interlude
  • You went back to the Blue Water Inn for lunch, and had some conversation. DeLuna stayed and chatted with Rictavio, who had a lot of helpful information about the land of Barovia, including some of your card reading.
  • Tybolt picked up his Silvered Rapier from the local Blacksmith.
  • Edmond and Malik headed to the town square.
  • Tybolt, upon exiting the blacksmith saw that Edmond and Malik were being followed, but again the pursuer slipped away.
  • Tybolt was knocked unconscious. By the pursuer.
  • After returning to the Blue Water Inn, the party noticed that Tybolt wasn’t with them.
  • DeLuna asked some local ravens to search for him, and Malik sent out his… very stupid… raven familiar to do the same.
Wactherhaus
  • Tybolt awoke in a well appointed parlor with a man named Ernst, and Lady Fiona Wachter watching him.
  • Fiona made her distaste for the Burgomaster known, and offered Tybolt 2000 gp to help her replace him as the leader of Vallaki.
  • They let Tybolt leave without issue, and told stories about the Burgomaster hanging dissenters.
  • He learned that the two young noblemen at the Blue Water Inn on the night you arrived where her sons Nikolai and Karl.
    Interlude
  • Upon leaving the house, Tybolt and the party met back up, and he did not say what happened to him, only that he talked to a local noble woman who wants to replace the Burgomaster.
  • You learned that the Blue Water Inn’s latest wine shipment is 2 weeks late, and that their wine comes from the Wizard of Wines Winery west of town.
Blinsky’s Toys
  • You headed to Blinky’s Toys, as you were told he was now the caretaker of Rictavio’s monkey.
  • He showed you many odd toys in his shop, including some dolls that bore a startling resemblance to Ireena, who told you she’d never been to Vallaki.
  • The Ireena dolls are commissioned by Izek, who seems to be obsessed with her despite the fact they’ve never met or seen eachother.
  • It was apparent after talking to him, that Madam Eva’s card reading was referring to Rictavio as the “man with a monkey who is more than he seems.”
  • Tybolt swiped one of the Ireena dolls.
Burgomaster’s Mansion
  • On your arrival to the Burgomaster’s mansion you were taken to a parlor and greeted by the Burgomaster who thanked you for helping with the Vampire Spawn.
  • After a few minutes you were taken to the dining room and jointed by his wife, as well as Izek and Ireena.
  • You learned that Milijov and Henrik have both been sentenced to death by hanging for their roles in the desecration of the church.
  • You asked that father Lucian be allowed to plea on Milijov’s behalf.
  • You learned that Izek and Ireena may be related (brother/sister), but I’m not going to spell that whole thing out here.
  • The Burgomaster did not want to keep Ireena in Vallaki, given the attention Strahd has paid her, but Izek convinced him to let her stay. She must stay within the walls of the church from sun down to sun up.
  • The burgomaster let you know that the “master of the marsh” was an old term for the Burgomaster of Berez, which is a flooded & destroyed town to the southwest of Vallaki.

SESSION 9:

Vallaki Blue Water Inn
  • You awoke and had some breakfast at the Blue Water Inn.
  • DeLuna left a doll for Freek and Myrtle, and learned from Urwin Martikov that his kids had met your refugee children at the local school house, they seem well cared for.
Road West of Vallaki
  • You left Vallaki, shortly outside of town you saw another path that led to a Vistani encampment.
  • You passed crossroads leading to Berez, and also to the haunted mansion.
  • DeLuna found what looked like a normal path off of the main road, but quickly ascertained that it was actually an ambush setup, and marked it to avoid it before continuing on to the winery.
  • Deluna found a pouch of 5gold made from flesh hanging from a tree.
Winery
  • When reaching the winery, you were beckoned into a copse of trees on the northern edge of the area by a man. He identified himself as Davian Martikov, father of Urwin back at the Blue Water Inn.
  • He let you know that they have been assailed by evil Druids and plant creatures for the last week, finally being driven out of the winery this very morning.
  • You agreed to help the retake the winery, they are clearly exhausted but agreed to provide you with a distraction to enter the winery.
  • Then you saw something new, Davian and his family all transformed into raven-human hybrids. They are Were-Ravens. To your knowledge, Wereravens do not exist in the Forgotten Realms.
  • They made swooping passes over the farm and you were able to sneak up to the Winery.
  • Throughout the Winery, you encountered four druids:
    — One was in the loading dock area, and carrying a magic staff of a spongy black wood.
    — One was in the fermentation area, poisoning one of the fermentation vats.
    — One was in the printing press, doing God knows what.
    — One was in the wine storage basement, doing God knows what.
  • DeLuna disarmed the Druid in the loading dock area, and when he grabbed the Druid’s staff, his consciousness was transported somewhere else.
  • The Druid fired back a Thunderwave, and knocked DeLuna back against the wall, but DeLuna was completely unaware of this happening.
  • The team killed the druid.
  • DeLuna was on the bottom of a large hill, topped with a ring of stones. Around the hill were dozens and dozens of burial cairns, each topped with stacked stones.
  • As he went up the hill, he saw that lightning was striking specific spots on the stone ring. Inside the ring, he saw a 50’ tall wicker man, packed with dirt, and bearing the visage of a vampire.
  • Passing through the the ring, he saw a gnarled old tree with an Axe buried in its side and several plant creatures around it.
  • He couldn’t be perceived by the plant creatures.
  • The Axe is ornately carved with images of leaves and trees, and the head appears to be made out of a green steel.
  • Where it was embedded in the tree, the tree was actually bleeding (blood, not sap).
  • DeLuna heard chanting behind him, back up on the hill.
  • After a couple of attempts to wake up DeLuna, Edmond decided to cut the staff in half.
  • When he did so DeLuna’s consciousness was pulled back into himself, and the staff let out a blood curdling scream.
  • When the staff did so, you heard all of the movement of the plant creatures in the winery and on the farm stop. It seems that they died.
  • You dispatched the other three druids, and talked Tybolt out of looting the master bedroom.
  • DeLuna found a secret room in the basement between the two wine storage rooms.
  • Upon opening the secret door, he rushed forward and felt all the heat pulled from his body as he fell unconscious.
  • Edmond and Eddison pulled him out of the cave, seeing that the walls were lined with Brown Mold.
  • Edmond used his lay on hands to revive DeLuna, and that is where we ended the night.
